R U Hmlt?
That is the question

by William Shakespeare,
with new text by James Anderson & Claudine Stephen-Smith

Mercury’s Wings Theatre Company (MWTC), with the support of the Regional Arts Development Fund, recently launched its latest work R U Hmlt?.

R U Hmlt? is a one-man show consisting of text from the Shakespearean play and original text by MWTC directors James Anderson and Claudine Stephen-Smith. The premise for the piece came from a strong desire to illustrate that in some way – everyone is Hamlet. Claudine has previously directed an award-winning full production of Hamlet with James in the leading role. Both wanted to explore the contemporary relevance of the text and the character more. It was with this desire that the production was conceived.

The Regional Arts Development Fund Committee responded to the idea with the sponsorship to develop the work to this stage of a first showing, which took place in January at the new GCCC arts facility, Kirra Hill, Coolangatta. The Trade and Occupational College of Australia generously supplied MWTC with rehearsal space.
